Project Type: Downtown Streetscape with Public Art
The Broadway Streetscape Improvement Project is in downtown Laguna Beach, adjacent to the Civic Arts District. Traffic-calming planter islands were created at the intersection to improve pedestrian safety by decreasing vehicular speed. The plantings in these planter islands are primarily succulents, to emulate low maintenance cottage gardens from the 1920’s-30’s era.
Public art was selected by the Laguna Beach Arts Commission for this project, and was coordinated by Alluvial.
The landscape incorporates native trees (California Live Oaks and California Sycamores) and selected native and drought-tolerant shrubs, in addition to succulents. Boulders excavated from the site were salvaged and used in the landscape. The irrigation system features subterranean drip, low-precipitation spray, and solar power transmitters.
